ProLifers’ Update on Genetic Engineering: OFF SWITCH FOR HIV

The field of genetic engineering is fascinating.

Researchers seem to have discovered a gene called HEAL that, when “switched off” (silenced) or deleted, actually defeats the ability of the virus HIV to replicate. That is, researchers have found an “off” switch for the virus that causes AIDS.

While pharmaceutical companies have developed medicines that do a good job of treating HIV so it doesn’t generate AIDS in people who are infected, the medicines never rid the patients of HIV. With this new discovery, we will likely be able to eliminate HIV in those infected persons, even if they stop taking the medicine.

So this is a big score for advocates of genetic engineering of human embryos, right?

Nope. This kind of genetic engineering will be researched and performed on born persons.

That’s the kind of mix-up that advocates of embryonic genetic engineering thrive on. Every advance in genetic engineering seems to the public like an argument for genetic engineering in all its forms. That perspective is highly dangerous for the embryos who are edited, future generations, and the embryos who are killed en masse in associated research.

Every advance in genetic engineering of adults is actually another argument AGAINST genetic engineering of human embryos. If we can heal born persons, especially when they have an opportunity to express their consent, then we have less reason to be experimenting with editing embryos.

As I said, genetic engineering is fascinating. It is also a complex array of technologies, some of which are wonderful and others that are evil.

Yes, evil. We need to speak up and educate others about the overwhelming harm that comes from genetic engineering of human embryos.
